Street Racing Blamed in Multi-Car Crash That Left Pedestrian Dead in Downey

A high-speed street race ended in a multi-vehicle crash in Downey that sent one of the cars careening into and killing a pedestrian, police said Monday.

The multi-vehicle collision near the intersection of Bellflower Boulevard and Imperial Highway was reported to police at about 8:40 p.m. Sunday, the Downey Police Department stated in a news release.

A black BMW 328i and a gray Hyundai Tiburon were street racing eastbound on Imperial Highway as a Nissan Altima with three people inside began making a left turn in the Bellflower Boulevard intersection, according to the Police Department.

The BMW hit the Nissan before careening out of control and striking a pedestrian who was standing on the corner sidewalk.

The pedestrian, who was not identified, died as a result of the collision, the Police Department sated.

The three people inside the Nissan were taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries, according to the news release.

The driver of the BMW was identified by the Police Department as a 20-year-old man from South Gate.

Witnesses told police the vehicles were traveling at speeds close to 100 mph as they approached the Bellflower Boulevard intersection.

The driver of the Hyundai, identified as a 34-year-old man from Downey, managed to avoid crashing into the Nissan but struck the center divider.

Both the driver of the BMW and the Hyundai were booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.
