One man was dead, another wounded and a third in custody after some kind of confrontation led to a shooting behind an apartment complex in Downey Wednesday, police said.
Multiple 911 calls came in shortly before 5:30 p.m. reporting shots being fired behind the complex in the 12000 block of Downey Avenue.
Responding police found a man dead in the rear parking lot of the complex, and about the same time heard about a crash a quarter-mile away, according to Downey Police Department Lt. Mark McDaniel.
A small gray car struck two unrelated vehicles, and then three men ran from the first vehicle, McDaniel said. The gray car appeared to be a Toyota Yaris, video from the scene showed.

Two men were taken into custody nearby on Fontana Street. One man had multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and was taken to a hospital for surgery, and the other man was taken for questioning at the police station, the lieutenant said.
The third individual fled, and three K-9 teams were searching for him. He was described only as male with dark hair and in a gray sweatshirt, McDaniel said.
Investigators were trying to piece together what happened, what the motive was, and who was a victim and who was a perpetrator, McDaniel said.
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the address of the shots fired report. The story has been updated.
